Hey Everyone
It’s that lovely time of year again when we must file our taxes. It’s 2008, I hope by now we’d all be doing this electronically by netfile, or at least using preparation software (ie Quicktax). Personally, I don’t even waste previous computer hard drive space installing software onto my computer. The past three years I’ve been using web based software created by Snaptax. Snaptax was so successfull in their web based tax return software they were purchased by Quicktax in 2006. Intuit has greatly build upon the shoulders of this company.
If you want to do your taxes through the web (no software download/install) there are two options I recommend. First and foremost, if you decide to use Quicktax Web click on the below link and use the RBC (Royal Bank of Canada) Employee Portal and save 30% off all Quicktax Web charges. It doesn’t matter if you an employee of RBC or not, the web portal/return is the exact same as the regular Quicktax Web (except you save 30%). This discount applies to various versions of Quicktax Web. Also, don’t forget, Quicktax Web is always free for those who make gross under $20 000 CAD per year.
For those who like a free alternative try Studio Tax
“As per CRA requirement, StudioTax 2007 has a limit of 20 returns per computer. Note that this is a pre-certified version that is missing the Netfile (the Canadian Revenue Agency certification for internet income tax submission and print functions), so you will need to download and install the certified version once it becomes available. However, now is the time to get yourself acquainted with the program and decide if it’s right for you!” Source: murrybear, RFD Forum

Yeah I figure it’s about time I become useful. A guy I work with who was a former computer science student (in his 3rd year) did his taxes this year by hand. He filled out the 2 inch tax booklet and sat around for a few hours with calculator in hand. So much wasted time…he could have been playing World of Warcraft or doing something else productive with his time…

I use Taxfreeway for the past 2 years, it is only $9.95 , irrespective of your income and you can file upto 20 returns. (last year it was unlimited but this year it is CRA’s restriction) This is really good. If you want to save this, download the software, prepare your return and take a print out and file it physically you can save this $9.95 even.
