Hey Everyone

It’s that lovely time of year again when we must file our taxes. It’s 2008, I hope by now we’d all be doing this electronically by netfile, or at least using preparation software (ie Quicktax). Personally, I don’t even waste previous computer hard drive space installing software onto my computer. The past three years I’ve been using web based software created by Snaptax. Snaptax was so successfull in their web based tax return software they were purchased by Quicktax in 2006. Intuit has greatly build upon the shoulders of this company.

If you want to do your taxes through the web (no software download/install) there are two options I recommend. First and foremost, if you decide to use Quicktax Web click on the below link and use the RBC (Royal Bank of Canada) Employee Portal and save 30% off all Quicktax Web charges. It doesn’t matter if you an employee of RBC or not, the web portal/return is the exact same as the regular Quicktax Web (except you save 30%). This discount applies to various versions of Quicktax Web. Also, don’t forget, Quicktax Web is always free for those who make gross under $20 000 CAD per year.

For those who like a free alternative try Studio Tax

“As per CRA requirement, StudioTax 2007 has a limit of 20 returns per computer. Note that this is a pre-certified version that is missing the Netfile (the Canadian Revenue Agency certification for internet income tax submission and print functions), so you will need to download and install the certified version once it becomes available. However, now is the time to get yourself acquainted with the program and decide if it’s right for you!” Source: murrybear, RFD Forum

People using the Quicktax software (installed on computer) to prepare taxes and filing by netfile can use the following promotion to get a $10 rebate. Click here for details.

I’m a 20 something Psychology/Sociology Major at Saint Mary’s University in Halifax NS with a passion for technology and ambitions in journalism and education. I want to teach the world what technology can do and promote an interest in science and technology.

I am combining my love of technology with my interest in the human mind. My particular interest is in “digital convergence” (the coming together of digital technologies with everyday life) and how it affects human society. I hope to follow in the footsteps of the great scholars and change the world. The psychosocial impacts of an emerging technology take generations to truly see the impact. Digital technology is in its infancy with years ahead to develop. This, paired with our innate human curiosity will propel us through the 21st century and beyond.

A few of my favorite quotes:

“Once social change begins, it cannot be reversed. You cannot uneducate the person who has learned to read. You cannot humiliate the person who feels pride. You cannot oppress the people who are not afraid anymore. We have seen the future, and the future is ours.” (Cesar Chavez - American Activist and Labor Organizer. 1927-1993 Founded the National Farm Workers Association)

“What is important is to fulfill one’s own potentials at the highest level possible, whatever one’s endeavor” (Abram Maslow, Humanistic Approach Psychologist)
